Lakeland Superintendent's Brother Honored as a Hero of the Year

by Liana Bennett

Lakeland superintendent Mr. Ryan Huff's brother, Dr. C.J Huff, has been honored by People magazine as a 2011 Hero of the Year.  Dr. Huff is the superintendent of Joplin schools.  He was able to reopen schools just 87 days after a tornado demolished much of the district. This amazing feat was accomplished with the help of countless volunteers and the ability to turn empty spaces, such as a warehouse and a department store, into classrooms.  The Lakeland R-III school district is very proud to have contributed to the efforts of rebuilding the Joplin school district.  Mr. Huff was able to present a check with funds collected by the students, parents and staff to his brother at the conclusion of the 2010-2011 school year.  Lakeland also participated in a book drive to help the Joplin school libraries replace what was lost.  The article featuring Dr. Huff is included in the November 7th  "Triumph After Tragedy" issue of People magazine.
