At Lakeland R-III, the safety of our students, staff, and neighbors is always our top priority. We have recently received several inquiries regarding whether our campus storm shelter is available to the general public during severe weather events. We would like to provide clarity on the specific guidelines and legal requirements governing our facility.
While it is true that a FEMA grant was instrumental in funding this project, the shelter was designed and approved specifically as a storm shelter for the school. Unlike larger community shelters designed for township-wide use, our facility’s capacity was calculated based strictly on our student and staff population, plus any visitors who may be on-site during the school day.
Operating Hours & Guidelines According to the Project Management plan required by SEMA and FEMA:
School Hours: The shelter is available for students, staff, and visitors from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Public Access: Outside of these times, the shelter is not designated as a public community shelter.
While not specifically in the plan, the shelter will also remain available during any school-sanctioned activities that occur at the school outside of normal hours (such as athletic events or performances).
FEMA grant awards are based on specific geographical data and the density of the surrounding population. Based on Lakeland’s location and proximity to the towns we serve, our grant was awarded specifically to protect those under our care during the school day.
We encourage all community members to identify their closest designated public shelter and have a family safety plan in place for after-hours emergencies. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe environment for our students.
